New Delhi: Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has approached the Delhi High Court in connection with the deaths of seven people after a hostel building collapsed in Satya Niketan. She has filed an application seeking to be made a party to the case.

The matter was heard on Thursday before a bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, appearing for the Central government, Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), opposed Kiran Bedi’s application. He sought time from the court to file objections to the application.

Court Comments on the Application

During the hearing, the court asked the counsel appearing for the Centre about the nature of the objections that would be filed against the application. The bench observed that Kiran Bedi is a responsible citizen and has administrative experience. The court also noted that the matter concerns a broader public interest.

The High Court has, for now, given the Centre and the concerned parties time to file their responses. The court will subsequently decide whether Kiran Bedi should formally be made a party to the case.

Seven People Had Died

Seven people lost their lives in the incident involving the collapse of the hostel building in Satya Niketan. Following the accident, questions were raised regarding building safety, construction standards and the responsibility of the concerned departments.

Kiran Bedi’s application to become a party could broaden the scope of the proceedings in the case. The further course of the matter will become clear after the court’s next order.
