SRINAGAR: The seven-day autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly began amid heavy uproar on Monday. Opposition BJP legislators staged protests in the House over various issues. During heated exchanges between members of the ruling side and the Opposition, a scuffle-like situation developed, prompting Assembly marshals to intervene.

During the disruption, BJP legislators raised several pending demands, including job security, regularisation, retirement benefits and social security for NHM employees. They also protested over electricity tariffs and the regularisation of daily-wage workers.

Slogans were also raised in the Assembly over the demand to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Opposition members questioned the government over governance, employment and electricity-related issues, while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah continued to speak amid the disruption.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary said the government was prepared to respond to the issues raised in the House. The Opposition, meanwhile, accused the government of failing to fulfil its commitments.

The disruption on the opening day has brought issues including employment, NHM employees, electricity tariffs, regularisation and restoration of statehood to the centre of the Assembly debate.
