New Delhi: Amid the passage of a new US sanctions bill linked to India’s purchase of crude oil from Russia, India has made its position clear. The Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that all necessary steps would be taken to protect the country’s energy security and trade and economic interests.

The issue is linked to the ‘Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’, which was passed by the US House of Representatives. The House approved the bill by a vote of 262-159 on Wednesday. It has now moved forward for US President Donald Trump’s signature.

What Could Be the Impact on India?

Under the bill, the US President could get the authority to impose additional tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that purchase large quantities of oil and gas from Russia. India and China are among the countries that could be affected by the provision.

However, this does not mean that a 100 percent tariff has been immediately imposed on India. The actual decision to impose such tariffs would rest with the US President.

India Raises Its Concerns With the US

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India has held high-level discussions with US officials on the issue in recent months. India has conveyed its concerns about the potential impact of the proposed measures on both bilateral relations and international energy markets.

India has also said that it will continue to meet its energy requirements while maintaining diversified sources of energy in line with changing global market conditions. The government will also work with Indian industry and trade organisations to address potential trade-related impacts.
