Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar has taken voluntary retirement (VRS) nearly three months before the end of his scheduled tenure. The state government has approved his VRS with immediate effect. Following his retirement, he has been appointed as Bihar’s Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).
Vinay Kumar is a 1991-batch IPS officer. He applied for VRS on Friday, which was approved by the state government. According to the notification issued by the government, he was granted immediate retirement by relaxing the rule requiring a three-month notice period.
Vinay Kumar Appointed Chief Information Commissioner
Vinay Kumar has been appointed as Bihar’s Chief Information Commissioner. The post had been vacant since the tenure of senior IAS officer Tripurari Sharan ended on July 31.
A committee headed by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary approved Vinay Kumar’s name for the post of Chief Information Commissioner on Friday. Following this, the General Administration Department issued a notification regarding his appointment on Saturday.
Preeta Verma Given Responsibility as Acting DGP
Following Vinay Kumar’s VRS, 1991-batch IPS officer Preeta Verma has been given additional charge as Bihar DGP. She will serve as acting DGP until the state gets a full-time Director General of Police.
Preeta Verma is from Rajasthan and is reportedly among the key contenders for the DGP post in terms of seniority. She is also the first woman IPS officer to serve as acting DGP in Bihar.
Activity Intensifies Over Appointment of New DGP
Vinay Kumar’s scheduled tenure was set to continue until December 13, 2026. With him stepping down before the end of his tenure, discussions over the appointment of Bihar’s next full-time DGP have now intensified.
Names of senior IPS officers have started being discussed in police and administrative circles. Attention is now focused on the process of selecting the new DGP.
The key question now is which senior IPS officer the Bihar government will approve as the permanent DGP.
