Islamabad. Pakistani security forces have claimed that five militants were killed and 23 abducted people were freed during an operation in the restive Balochistan province. The action was carried out along the Chaman-Karachi N-25 highway near Kalat. According to Pakistan’s military media wing, the militants had established a checkpoint on the highway to restrict the movement of people.

According to security officials, the incident took place during the night of September 18 and 19. Armed men were allegedly attempting to abduct travellers for ransom, carry out extortion and take control of vehicles. Security forces reportedly received information about the activity and launched an operation, during which an exchange of fire took place. Military officials said five militants were killed.

During the operation, security forces reportedly recovered 23 abducted people safely from the alleged militants’ location. Six trucks, three buses and two cars were also reportedly recovered. Officials said weapons, ammunition and explosive material were also found at the site.

The Pakistani military has described those killed as members of a separatist militant network and alleged that the organisation receives support from India. India has denied such allegations. Therefore, this claim should be understood as an assertion made by the Pakistani military.

Security forces said search and security operations were continuing in surrounding areas following the operation. The stated objective is to identify any other armed individuals in the area and ensure normal movement along the highway and the safety of local residents.

Balochistan has continued to witness separatist violence and security operations for an extended period.
