New Delhi: Indian filmmaker Rima Das has been selected as one of the three jury members for the prestigious New Currents Award at the 31st Busan International Film Festival.

At the festival, which is considered one of Asia’s major film events, Das will evaluate films by emerging filmmakers.

She will serve on the jury alongside South Korean actress Shim Eun-kyung and Chinese producer Shan Zuolong. The three jury members will assess films competing in the New Currents section and select the award winner.

The New Currents Award is one of the major competitive awards at the Busan International Film Festival. It aims to recognise and encourage emerging filmmakers from Asia. The award also carries a cash prize of 20 million Korean won (KRW 20 million), which is approximately US$14,719.

Rima Das is a prominent filmmaker from Assam’s regional cinema and is known for her independent filmmaking style. Her films have attracted attention from audiences and critics at national and international film festivals. Her film ‘Village Rockstars’ also received international recognition.

The Busan International Film Festival is one of Asia’s important film festivals and provides a global platform for new and emerging filmmakers from Asian cinema. The New Currents competition focuses particularly on Asian directors making their first or early films.

Rima Das’s inclusion on the jury highlights the international presence of Indian and particularly regional cinema. During her role on the jury, she will evaluate emerging filmmakers from across Asia and their creative work.
