Khandwa. The death anniversary of actor Anup Kumar, a member of the famous Ganguly family of Hindi cinema, is being observed on September 20. Born in Khandwa, Anup Kumar’s real name was Kalyan Kumar Ganguly. He was the younger brother of legendary actor Ashok Kumar and the elder brother of Kishore Kumar. He died in Mumbai on September 20, 1997.

Anup Kumar was born on March 24, 1926, in Khandwa. All three Ganguly brothers—Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar and Kishore Kumar—established their own identities in Indian cinema. Ashok Kumar was counted among the prominent stars of the early era of Hindi cinema, while Kishore Kumar created an enduring identity as both an actor and singer. Anup Kumar also carved out his own place through his acting career.

Anup Kumar is particularly remembered for popular films such as ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’. He acted in several films during his career and played a variety of roles, including comedy. His performances were known for their natural style and distinctive sense of humour.
