Nagoya, September 24. Indian boxer Sumit suffered a setback at the Asian Games when an injury forced him to withdraw from his men’s 70kg pre-quarterfinal bout. Sumit was facing Iraq’s Al Saray Ali Qasim Hamdan.

The 23-year-old boxer from Haryana started the bout well and was leading after the first two rounds. However, during the third round, he lost his balance while trying to avoid a punch and fell. He injured his knee during the incident.

After sustaining the injury, Sumit was not in a position to continue the bout. Considering his condition, the referee stopped the contest and declared the Iraqi boxer the winner. As a result, Sumit’s hopes of progressing further at the Asian Games came to an end due to the injury.

Sumit had made an impressive start to the competition. In his opening bout, he defeated Thailand’s Bunjong Sinsiri by a 5-0 unanimous decision to reach the pre-quarterfinals.

Sumit had also performed well during the opening two rounds of the pre-quarterfinal and appeared to be in control of the bout. However, the injury he suffered in the third round brought his campaign to an unexpected end.

The bout was particularly disappointing for the Indian contingent as Sumit appeared to be in a strong position before sustaining the injury. The seriousness of his injury and his further condition will become clear after a medical examination.
