Ahmedabad. The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to the state government and Adani Enterprises in connection with the arrest of journalist Ravi Nair. Nair approached the High Court challenging his arrest, which followed a non-bailable warrant issued by a sessions court. The matter will be heard further on Monday.

The case is related to a defamation proceeding. According to the available information, a lower court had convicted Nair in a defamation complaint filed in 2021 and sentenced him to one year in prison along with a fine of ₹5,000. He subsequently challenged the decision before the district court. On March 9, the district court stayed his sentence and granted him bail, but imposed a condition requiring his personal appearance during the proceedings.

A non-bailable warrant was later issued against him over his failure to appear personally before the court. The district court rejected his application seeking cancellation of the warrant and ordered that he be sent to judicial custody. Nair subsequently filed a petition before the Gujarat High Court challenging the arrest and the proceedings related to the warrant.

Justice M.K. Thakker of the High Court’s single-judge bench took up the matter urgently on Saturday and issued notices to the concerned parties. The court has listed the matter for further hearing on Monday. The petition raises questions concerning the arrest procedure and the issuance of the non-bailable warrant.

The High Court has not yet issued a final ruling on the merits of the case. The concerned parties are expected to present their positions during Monday’s hearing, following which the further legal position is expected to become clearer.
