Jamshedpur: The increasing number of stray dogs in the Kolhan region is becoming a matter of concern for people. Packs of dogs are now commonly seen on roads, in markets and in lanes in urban and residential areas, including Jamshedpur. As a result, people remain fearful of attacks and dog bite incidents.

The number of dog bite cases in the state also points to the seriousness of the situation. According to available reports, 52,669 dog-bite cases were recorded at Ranchi Sadar Hospital between January and June 2026. Large numbers of people are visiting hospitals every day for anti-rabies vaccines and treatment.

Waiting for a Permanent System

Concern is also being expressed over the number of stray dogs in various civic areas of Kolhan. There is a perceived need to effectively implement arrangements such as sterilisation, rescue and safe management to control them. People say that vaccination or treatment after an incident alone will not provide a permanent solution to the problem.

Increased Threat in Markets and Residential Areas

Complaints about packs of stray dogs being seen in several areas of Jamshedpur continue to emerge. People walking in the morning and evening, children and two-wheeler riders face difficulties when dogs suddenly run towards or chase them.

In the event of a dog bite, experts advise immediately washing the wound with running water and seeking medical advice on time. Rabies is a fatal disease, but timely treatment and prescribed vaccination can help prevent it.

There is now a need in Kolhan for local bodies to prepare a concrete and permanent action plan regarding the number of stray dogs, sterilisation, rescue and treatment arrangements, so that animal welfare can also be ensured along with public safety.
