Agriculture Secretary Atish Chandra said on Monday that the upcoming Rabi crop season could be challenging for areas dependent on rainfall. Referring to the El Nino weather pattern, he expressed concern that it could also affect foodgrain production. He said the challenges posed by climate change have now become a reality and their impact is being seen in the agriculture sector.

Addressing a two-day national conference on preparations for the Rabi crop season, the Agriculture Secretary said the Kharif season this year had also been particularly challenging for areas dependent on rainfall. Several states faced difficulties first in ensuring sowing across the targeted crop area and later in protecting the crops.

Chandra said production could be significantly affected in the upcoming season. He particularly highlighted the challenges that Rabi crops could face in rain-dependent regions.

According to the Agriculture Secretary, changes in weather patterns and uncertain rainfall directly affect agricultural production. Therefore, while preparing for the Rabi season, states need to formulate strategies keeping possible weather-related challenges in mind.

The objective of the national conference is to review preparations by states and concerned departments for the upcoming Rabi season. Discussions at the conference are covering issues including crop production, agricultural inputs and measures to deal with weather-related risks.

Amid concerns over El Nino, the upcoming Rabi season is considered important for the agriculture sector. Weather conditions could play a key role in determining crop production, particularly in areas with limited irrigation facilities and those dependent on rainfall.
