Congress held protests in different parts of the country on Friday over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Party leaders and workers raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and expressed their objections to the SIR process.

Congress said several questions have emerged among voters regarding the revision of electoral rolls. The party alleged that voters are facing difficulties related to their names and documents during the SIR process. Protesters demanded greater transparency from the Election Commission and clear responses to the objections being raised.

In some places, including Delhi, the situation was reportedly tense between police and protesters during the demonstrations. Police used measures including water cannons at some locations to control the crowd. Security arrangements were also strengthened to keep protesters within designated areas.

Congress leaders said the demonstrations were aimed at bringing issues related to electoral rolls and the election process into public discussion. The party said it would place its concerns regarding SIR before the Election Commission.

On the other hand, the Election Commission and the Bharatiya Janata Party have rejected Congress’s allegations. The commission has described SIR as a prescribed process for verification and updating of electoral rolls. According to the commission, the objective of the revision is to organize records of eligible voters.

The BJP has also questioned Congress’s allegations, saying that a legal process is available for filing claims and objections related to electoral rolls.

Amid differences among political parties over SIR, the issue continues to remain a subject of discussion. Following the protests, attention will now be on further political and legal developments.
