A sensational case involving the killing of a police officer has emerged from Amritsar, Punjab, on Friday. Two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants shot dead Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh at Bhagtanwala Grain Market. After the incident, police launched a search for the attackers.
According to police officials, the incident took place at Bhagtanwala Grain Market. ASI Harjit Singh was reportedly present there when two attackers arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at him. He was shot near the neck. He was critically injured and later died.
As soon as information about the incident was received, police teams reached the spot and cordoned off the entire area. CCTV footage from nearby cameras is being examined to identify the attackers. Police are also investigating the reason behind the killing and why the ASI was targeted.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav visited the scene. He also met the family of the deceased ASI and took stock of the investigation.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that Harjit Singh was shot near the neck. The police are collecting clues to identify the attackers and recover the weapon used in the incident.
The reason for the killing has not yet been established. Police are investigating the case from multiple angles. Officials said police teams are working to identify and arrest the attackers. Security arrangements have also been strengthened in and around Bhagtanwala Mandi following the incident.
